Vancouver

Standing at the starting line
staring down the course
the pounding of my heart
drowns out the crowd
3..2..1..... HUT!!

bump bump bump
down the line,
swish,
over the jump
skis pounding, edges gripping
heart racing
whoosh
past the finish line

I skid to a stop,
all the sounds come back
clap clap clap
goes the crowd,
I win the medal,
the gold one
I am Hannah Kearney.

Hannah Kearney

It was my first year at Killington, I was 9 years old, and I got to meet the “queen of moguls”, Hannah Kearney.

Two years ago Hannah came to Killington Mountain, where I ski and train.  My whole ski team got to meet her, and all of us had her sign our helmets and got to ask her what it was like to win the Olympic Freestyle Gold.  At that time, I thought it was amazing to met her, but I didn’t think I would see her again.

When I went to ramp camp, I didn’t realize that Hannah Kearney was going to be there too.  I was just standing on the top of the ramp waiting for my turn, and all of a sudden I see Hannah Kearney walking up the ramp stairs.  I was in the “OMG moment”  where you don’t know what to say.  She is my idol and I got to dry land train with her.  I got to ramp with an Olympic gold medalist, watching her do aerials!  She talked to me and inspired me to try a 360, and do the bigger jump.  Once I did it, I tried again and kept doing it until I got it.  It felt really cool to talk to an Olympic Gold medalist, and ramp with her.

I think it’s really amazing that some people go their whole life not meeting anyone that truly inspired them to do something, but I not only got to talk to my idol, I actually got to train with my idol.

I am looking forward to going to Ramp camp this year, because Hannah said she would be working on her “new big trick’’.  She said she would be working on a more technical aerials, and I can’t wait to see what that is.

I feel pretty lucky that I get to see some of her tricks before the public eye does.  I am glad that I got to meet my idol and she will keep inspiring me to work harder in the moguls.
This picture is at Ramp Camp and Hannah is about to go off the jump.  Thats me in the green helmet getting to train with my idol.

Hannah Kearney Info

“My first run was bad. Training between runs was bad. Waiting (for other competitors to finish) was the most nervous I've ever been in my life. I skied a slow, conservative run, but it was solid. It was really clean, and I think that's what won it for me.”
-Hannah Kearney

I find it hard to believe that someone like Hannah Kearney could be nervous.  She has 5 world cups, she was world champion in 2005, she is a 4 time national champion, she has 47 world cup podiums, 30 gold medals in various competitions, was voted best female athlete 2 years in a row, and was the first American to win the freestyle gold medal.  But that makes me think that she is just like me.

Hannah Kearney was born on February 26, 1986, to Jill and Tom Kearney.  Her parents taught her how to ski at age 2 using a horse halter as a harness, because she loved horses.  She learned to ski at Waterville Valley, NH, and started skiing on the Waterville Valley Freestyle Team when she was 7 with coach Wes Preston.  She was not only a freestyle skier but a straight A student, soccer player, and a track champion.  At age 17 she took up moguls full time.  Even though she was committing herself to one sport, she still maintained a normal life, by going to a public school, skiing only on the weekends, and seeing friends.

As quoted from Hannah Kearney.

“If you don’t love the sport or career, it is not worth pursuing.  A lot of satisfaction in life is cultivated by working towards a goal because you feel organically motivated and truly happy about your choices.  I fear that some kids are losing their youth as a result of specializing in a sport at a really young age.  Because my decisions were truly my own, my results have reflected the passion I feel.’’

-Hannah Kearney

Hannah Kearney has made this quote true in her life by reaching any goal she sets her mind to by hard work and determination.  She moves to Lake Placid NY, in the off season to do water ramp training, and trains, trains, trains.  Last summer she logged over 1000 jumps into the training pool.  This year she is working on more technical aerials for the next winter Olympics.

-Hannah Kearney

In 2006 Hannah Kearney came into the Olympics strong but on her first run she stumbled and didn’t land her second jump.  Injuries happened in 2007-2008 when she tore her ACL and had a concussion.  In 2009, after a lot of hard work and training, Hannah set her sights on getting back on the Olympic team.  She went to Steamboat CO, for the Olympic Trials more determined than ever.  It paid off!  She won the Olympic Trials securing her place on the Olympic team.

At the 2010 winter Olympics, Hannah went into the final rounds with the highest score.  She skied her last run clean and fast, staying in her lines and landing her jumps earning herself her first Olympic gold medal.  Although winning the gold was one of her best life-time achievements, she feels that the highlight of her season was winning the Overall Freestyle Globe.  She won every mogul and dual mogul competition, except for one 4th place in Japan in February 2010.  This truly shows her dominance on the Freestyle Course.

During her free time, Hannah likes: horseback riding, playing soccer, knitting, cooking, mending, hiking, hanging out with friends, family, her dog Lola, and watching her brother play hockey.  Right now Hannah is enrolled in Dartmouth (in Hanover, NH) and just finished her first year.

I am looking forward to seeing Hannah Kearney again, to ramp and ski with her.  I am also excited to see her compete in the Olympics this year.

“Ending with a finish like I had today, leaves me hungry for next season”
